Originalmente, la lista de los pecados capitales es muchísimo, muchísimo más larga de la forma actual. Una de las formas, y básicamente de la que proviene la lista actual, es la creada en el siglo IV por el monje Evagrius Ponticus, que redactó ocho "pensamientos malvados" en griego, posteriormente traducidos al latín por el Cristianismo Occidental:

· porneia (prostitución, fornicación=luxuria, lujuria)
· philargyria (avaritia, avaricia)
· hypereephania (hibris, sobreestimación=superbia, orgullo)
· lypee (tristeza (AUNQUE en la Filocalia a este termino se le conoce como ENVIDIA, tristeza ante la suerte de otros)=tristitia, pesadumbre, tristeza, desesperación)
· orgee (ira)
· kenodoxia (vanagloria)
· akeedia (=acedia, pereza)
