Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has presented decorations in an awards ceremony which is being regarded by some analysts as a show of defiance against the United Nations.


The U-N has said it will create a new weapons inspection agency to resume disarming Iraq of its banned weapons.


Iraqi television showed Saddam Hussein handing out medals to senior officers on Tuesday.


The news programme also claimed that the Iraqi minister for religious affairs had distributed gifts and personal greetings from the President to Christian orphanages "..to mark the occasion of Christmas and the new year."


The broadcast said the Christian organisations had "expressed appreciation for his excellency's gifts."
