Michael Brecker’s “Tales of the Hudson” have long become classics. In this release, the core quintet intertwine their ensemble playing to perfection. Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette can play really loose, since they know their rhythm scaffold won’t fail, while equally brilliant pianist Joey Calderazzo weaves in the sparsest of chords. There’s near-perfect communication among the members of the rhythm section. Metheny’s elegant guitar play and Brecker’s edgy saxophone jumps are sometimes part of the whole, only to take off again into higher spheres without losing ground contact. Through the entire set, from the fast-moving opener “Slings And Arrows” to a lascivious “Midnight Voyage”, the five musicians prove to be extremely gifted soloists and reliable backbones for the group.
During this Tokyo concert, the band handle Coltrane’s heritage in an offbeat, snappily energetic manner. Without sacrificing their melodic base, these five guys give an impression of just how many varied and dynamic registers can be pulled within the far-reaching musical wingspan of jazz; and just how brilliantly mutual support can turn out when musicians get deeply involved with each other – a classic example of perfect harmony in a jazz band.
