9. Stargazer

The eyes of the stargazer are located on the top of his head and his mouth is facing upwards so that he can submerge his entire body in the muddy sea floor. The stargazer is an ambush predator waiting patiently in the sand for his dinner to swim close enough to grab. Some of Stargazer species come equipped with large spines that can can venom or a shock of electricity, earning them the title of “the meanest thing in creation.”

8. Chimera
Also known as the ghost shark, these creatures closest living relatives are the sharks. Branching off the sharks family tree nearly 400 million years ago, this unique animal now lives isolated in depths of up to 8,500 ft deep and as shallow as 1,000 feet. They lack the countless rows of razor sharp teeth like the shark, but they have instead large teeth like plates perfect for grinding up the tough shells of local crustaceans.

7.Pacific Blackdragon
This fierce predator hunts in the temperate and subtropical waters in the Pacific Ocean. Only the female of the species will develop teeth or a stomach. The males are born they mate and then die. The female however uses a lighted lure in the form of a fleshy appendage that hangs down from her chin. Using this lure she attracts prey close to her fang like teeth from which there is no escape.

6. Grenadier
With several different species of Grenadiers, this creepy deep sea dweller can be found in warm and temperate regions. Some of them are even able to produce light using special organs. They can live in depths of up to 19,000 feet. Being deep sea scavengers, these creatures will feed off of anything edible that comes their way. The female will lay a large of amount of eggs that will float to a spot in the ocean that is perfect for their development. Young Grenadiers will spend their juvenile lives in shallow waters, gradually moving to greater depths with maturity.

5.Megamouth Shark
This massive sea creature has been measured at an astounding 18 feet long. With its gaping mouth open it swims through the deep oceans capturing the smallest of food items, plankton. The first Megamouth shark discovered was in 1976 off the coast of hawaii after it had gotten caught up in a Naval sea anchor. As of 2015 only 61 Megamouth sharks have been caught either by nets or cameras.

4.Viperfish
Running alongside this frightful looking creatures abdomen are three distinctly different types of tiny luminescent organs. He will put on a light show in the dark waters of the deep to attract prey. This fierce creature of the deep will wait for hours, motionless, for food to swim close enough. Once dinner draws close enough it uses its massive teeth and hinged jaw to capture its prey. They do not chew or tear their food, they swallow it hole. Although their bodies appear to be covered in scales, it is actually a transparent gelatinous coating. Some viperfish are completely transparent.

3. Anglerfish
These underwater monsters come equipped with their very own fishing pole, line and lure attached to their heads. Just as the anglerfish itself comes in many different shapes and sizes so do the lures on the tip of their poles. Some species have been documented swimming upside down suspending their lures in front of small crevices in order to draw out its tiny inhabitants. Some will even use a light at the end of their fishing lure to attract prey into their massive jaws. The Anglerfish is able to distend its jaws and stomach making it able to take in food twice its body size.

2.Terrible Claw Lobster
No mistaking where this cuddly guy gets his name. Each of its thin stretched out appendages are equipped with finger like spines that are perfect for keeping wriggling food items from escaping.
He was discovered by scientists during a census of marine life in 2007. Living in the deep oceans near the philippines, this small lobster scavenges the ocean floor for food. Being an opportune hunter he will even feast on other lobsters given the chance.

Sarcastic fringehead
These excessively aggressive little fish live 250 feet down off the California coast. They are extremely territorial fish. Their frightening large mouths are used to intimidate anybody that gets too close to its home. When two fringeheads are competing for the same crevasse or shell they will extend their jaws revealing a colorful mouth with rows of razor sharp teeth. The sarcastic fringehead will size up the competition by pushing their faces together to see who has the biggest mouth. The biggest mouth dominates and has earned its right to live and fish that small spot of ocean floor.
