RR7429A CYPRUS THE COUP AGAINST MAKARIOS
On July 15th 1974, members of the Cypriot National
Guard staged a coup against President Archbishop
Makarios to further their aim of Enosis, union of Cyprus
with Greece. Makarios fled to Britain and his place was
taken by Nicos Sampson, an ex-fighter of the Greek-
Cypriot guerrilla organization EOKA. This report traces
the career of Makarios from the colonial war with Britain
through independence in 1960, the intercommunal
clashes which followed, to the growth of a prosperous
Cyprus enjoying relative stability.
