Heartwarming segment about what later became Homeboy Industries. Mike Wallace interviewed a Jesuit priest in an East LA neighborhood when he was pastor at Dolores Mission Church, who reached out to gang members (many of whom were throwaways or came from abusive homes) by giving them unconditional love and support as well as finding them jobs and getting them back into school, and doing what he could to bring peace and stop gang violence. Despite some opposition from local police who thought he was too soft and were mad that he didn't turn them in for crimes, he stood by them.
I've been reading a book written about them by Celeste Fremon, this also covers the Pico Gardens and Aliso Village Housing Projects (torn down circa 1999).
Crazy to think these dudes Puppet, Rebel, and Grumpy from the Clarence Street Locos and East LA Dukes are in their early 40s now (older than G-Dog was back then!). Also am happy to find out that he's still as active as ever, having authored a book "Tattoos On The Heart" in 2010, and Homeboy is now is the biggest gang intervention program in the US.
