5.Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum is one very special place, also known as the The Valley of The Moon, you can experience out of this world scenery, and feel like you are part of an epic adventure. This desert has become an iconic spot for Hollywood, and it all started with Lawrence of Arabia. The latest movie to shoot some out of this world scenes here was none other than The Martian.

“I was in awe of that place, it was really, really special. One of the most spectacular and beautiful places I have ever seen, and like nothing I’ve ever seen anywhere else on Earth.” - Matt Damon

So who lives here ? The locals tribes are all of bedouin descent and until recently lived nomadic lifestyles. Since the rise of tourism in the area, most have turned their knowledge of the red desert into a profession.

4. Easter Island, Chile

Have you seen these statues before? They are called Moai and were built by the ancient Rapa Nui people.

First western accounts of this mythical island date back to 1722, but the island is believed to have been inhabited since 300 AD.

Since the 1700s, the island population has suffered greatly, starting with what was believed to be a civil war over resources, then the pirates and privateers came. Peruvian slave raiders attacked the Rapa Nui multiple times, stealing and killing people every time.

Nowadays, the situation seems to be a bit better, but there is still some disagreements between native tribes.

3.Frankenstein Castle

Quick what's the name of the monster in the novel Frankenstein?

This beautiful hilltop castle in Germany is believed to be the inspiration behind Mary Shelley’s famous novel, Frankenstein.

This castle, has an abnormal amount of mystery and legends tied to it. It might be the deep dark forests surrounding it, or the actual tale of a real life mad scientists.

Johann Conrad Dippel was born in frankenstein castle, at some point he became a renowned alchemist and claimed to have created the “elixir of life”. He called it dippel oil, and tried to exchange the magical formula for the deed of the Castle.

There are also claims that he was really into anatomy and may have performed autopsies and strange experiments on the dead. Sound familiar?

This might be a classic, which came first the chicken or the egg scenario, since none of the legends surrounding the castle have been substantiated. The only evidence linking the author Mary Shelley to the castle is the fact she spent a few hours in a town that was 10 miles away.

Oh there’s also some kind of a fountain of youth hidden in the backyard of the castle. Pretty cool.

2.Mada'in Saleh

Mada’in Saleh is commonly referred to as Al - Hijr, and it is the first site in Saudi Arabia to be considered a World Heritage Site. It was part of the ancient Nabataean Civilization which boasted Petra as its capital.

In 106 AD, the Roman Empire conquered the Nabataean people and made the area a part of The Roman Province of Arabia.

After the collapse of the Roman Empire the region became part of the Ottoman Empire and eventually the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, due to harsh climate and long periods of abandonment, the site has been preserved immensely.

The official nickname of the site is “The Capital of Monuments” among all ancient sites in Saudi Arabia.

1.Mount Nemrut

Finally we have the mysterious statues of Mount Nemrut, it is believed they were erected sometime during the 1st Century BC, and served as guardians to the unknown tomb behind them. No one knows who was buried there, or why they were important enough to warrant statues.

It is believed that the tomb might belong to Antiochus, a royal leader of the area during the Hellenistic Period, the ancient site was “discovered” in 1881, all of the statues have been beheaded because it was seen as false idol worship by locals.

The site is deteriorating, fast. There is not much that can be done to reconstruct or repair the statues, and the heavy snowfall during the winter speeds up their erosion immensely.
