Sunset Boulevard has become shorthand for what Los Angeles represents in the collective imagination. Most people do not see Los Angeles themselves, and instead imagine the world of fame and affluence they see on their TV screens. However, the reality of Los Angeles is not one glamorous place or setting – instead, it is a gigantic, diverse and complicated city, divided by its disparate neighborhoods. To know it you have to travel from east to west, across colliding communities that evoke both glitz and grit.
