James Hooper is a college student in Korea who comes from Somerset, in the south of England. At the age of 19 he stood at the top of Mt. Everest, and at 20 he traveled from the North Pole to the South Pole using only manpower. In 2008, he was chosen by "National Geographic" as Adventurer of the Year.
During his four years in Korea, he met the love of his life, and participated in many projects ? one of them being going from the summit of Jeju Island's Hallasan Mountain to Namsan Mountain in Seoul in 99 hours, using only manpower. During that adventure, he met a travel friend and mentor, Song Chang-seob.
After graduating in the fall of 2014, James is planning on leaving to explore another unknown world. But before that, he has a bucket list of things he wants to achieve in Korea.
The idea came by chance ? he was looking at satellite maps on his smartphone when the island of Geomundo caught his eye. In 1885, the island was occupied by the British Navy in the name of stopping Russian forces from moving southward. It is also known as Hamilton Island for its Hamilton Port. The island felt more special to James, whose own grandfather was part of the Royal Merchant Navy, and an avid map collector. Geomundo Island is a mysterious island to Koreans as well, nicknamed Camellia Island for its beautiful flowers.

한국에서 대학을 다니고 있는 제임스 후퍼.
그는 영국 남부 서머셋에서 태어나 19세에 에베레스트 정상에 섰고, 20세에는 북극에서 남극까지 무동력 종주에 나섰다.
2008년 "올해의 탐험가" - 내셔널지오그래픽 선정-에 선정된 그는 청년탐험가이다.
4년간의 한국생활 동안 그는 사랑하는 약혼녀를 얻었고 다양한 액티비티 활동을 펼쳤다.
그 중 대표적인 프로젝트는 제주도 한라산 정상에서 서울 남산까지 99시간 만에 무동력으로 종주한 활동이다.
이 도전에서 그는 송창섭이라는 이름의 친한 선배를 얻었다2014년 가을학기 졸업을 한 뒤에는 또 다른 미지의 세계로 떠날 예정인 제임스 후퍼에게는 한국에서 꼭 이루고픈 버킷리스트가 있다.
시작은 우연이었다. 지도를 보며 탐험의 영감을 얻는 그였기에 어느 날 스마트폰 위성지도로 보게 된 섬 하나가 그의 뇌리에 새겨졌다. 그 섬은 거문도였다.
그에게 영감을 준 거문도는 1885년 영국 해군이 러시아의 남하를 저지하기 위해 무단으로 점령한 역사적 사건의 무대인 까닭에 '해밀턴 항구'가 있는 섬, 즉 해밀턴 섬으로 불리기도 했다.
제임스 후퍼의 할아버지가 무역해군이자 열정적인 지도수집가이기에, 거문도가 지닌 사연은 그를 더욱 사로잡았다고 하는데... 한국인에게도 신비의 섬, 동백섬 등 다양한 별칭으로 불리는 거문도.
한국에서 맺은 소중한 인연들과 함께 거문도를 살펴보는 것이 그의 마지막 한국생활의 버킷리스트이다.
