Heavy fighting continued in Grozny on Wednesday (1/2) as Russian

troops, making a determined effort to push out Chechen rebels,

rained artillery and mortar shells on to the shattered remains of

the city. Nearby villages have been all

but destroyed in the Russian advance. Samashki lay in ruins on

Wednesday after troops attacked with heavy artillery and

helicopter gunships.
