5. The Illustrated Lady
The woman who became known as the Illustrated Lady was born in 1955 as Julia Gnuse. She was tattoo-free for most of her life and was actually never really interested in them until the 90s. It was then that she was diagnosed with porphyria, a disease which, for Julia, caused scarring on her skin every time she stepped out into the sun. She became very self-conscious of her scars and was looking for ways to hide them. So, she began collecting art. On her body that is. She started on her leg and loved the result, so she began to tattoo her entire body, ending finally with her face. In total, she spent $80,000 on her artwork and it is said that in the last year of her life, she began slowly removing them. Her tattoos included her favorite actors and actresses along with her favorite cartoons. She even appeared on Ripley’s Believe it or Not, where she debuted her face tattoos and was featured in the Guinness Book of World Records.
4. Zombie Boy
Rick Genest, also known as Zombie Boy and Rico the Zombie, is a true rags to riches story. He was born in Quebec, but grew up primarily around Montreal. According to his website’s biography, Rick grew up heavily into the punk-rock scene--surprise, surprise--and got his first tattoo at 16. Three years later, Rick started his all-body tattoos and entrusted artist Frank Lewis to cover him in ink. The tattoos, as you’ve probably seen, are primarily of a skeleton or a decaying human body. Now, at age 32, Rick claims he’s spent $20,000 on his body art. And how does he afford it? Well, like we said: rags to riches. He began as a sideshow attraction, performing stunts like play piercing or surviving an iron maiden, but these days...he’s a highly acclaimed fashion model for Nicola Formichetti and his career has only gotten more successful since then. He’s now a brand in and of himself--in fact, his tattoos are copyrighted.
3. Red Skull
So, $20,000 in tattoos is a lot. But Henry Rodriguez of Venezuela spent 30,000 pounds, just under $40,000, to look like the comic book villain Red Skull. A lot of people have taken issue with his extreme appearance, not the least of which is with the political connotations, but this husband and father couldn’t be happier. His modifications include dermal implants, eyeball tattoos, and facial tattooing to contour the skull shape. With the help of body modification surgeon Emilio Gonzalez, whose background is apparently questionable, Henry was able to take the biggest step in his transformation to become Red Skull: the removal of his nose. Emilio claims he conducted many tests on Henry including checking nasal anatomy, mental health tests, and physical health checks to make sure Henry was ready to take such an extreme step.
2. Flesh Tunnel Guy
So far, everyone’s gotten a nickname and we honestly couldn’t come up with anything better than flesh tunnel guy because you know what, if you Google that, you’ll get plenty of results all about Joel Miggler. He’s the current, and maybe only ever, holder of the Guinness World Record for number of flesh tunnels. Joel has 11 flesh tunnels in his face, 27 piercings, and tattoos. Okay, but we’ll get to the questions everyone wants answered. How...does he eat? What about soup? He says he eats just fine, but he has to put in solid plugs if he wants to drink anything. If you want to see something awesome though, find the Guinness video of this man eating strawberry lace through his flesh tunnels. There’s a sentence we never thought we’d say.
Parrot Man
We would say that his real name is Ted Richards, but it isn’t. Not anymore. Ted had been called “Mr. Parrotman” for so long that he just went ahead and legally changed his name. So, Ted Parrotman is known in his hometown of Bristol for a being the guy who owns parrots and now he’s known as the guy who looks like one. In his journey to look more like his parrots, whom he considers his family more than his estranged parents and siblings, he has gotten 110 tattoos, 50 piercings, has split his tongue, and has gotten horns implanted in his forehead. But the craziest thing he’s had done is getting his ears surgically removed to better fit the profile of a parrot. Wouldn’t that get you a lot of weird looks? How can someone be happy looking like this? He says children love how he looks, with his colorful hair and colorful eyes, and are more curious than anything about his ears. He loves the attention and regrets none of what he’s had done.
