8. SOUNDBITE (English) First Lieutenant Christopher Morris, 4th Infantry Division:
"With about four motivated guys and a mine detector, we went through the whole area and in that particular area we turned up five caches, two being four (M) million a piece and then the other two containing the jewels and about 300-thousand dollars in American cash. The fifth cache was documents, pictures, photos, some passports, some things like that, that pointed us towards that these people were definitely involved with Saddam's immediate family and they were keeping the caches as kind of a safety deposit for him."
9. Various of passport belonging to Sajida Hussein, Saddam's wife
10. SOUNDBITE (English) First Lieutenant Christopher Morris, 4th Infantry Division:
"The intelligence that we've got right now leads us to believe that one of Saddam's close bodyguards was the initial owner of that house and when Saddam left he disappeared with him. And from what it looked like from when we hit the objective, the people there were just there to guard it. They were just safeguarding the area. I'm pretty sure that they knew what was there. It hadn't looked like the house had been used by anyone besides the women, all the men had been sleeping outside, which is kind of an indicator that they weren't living there, they were just keeping an eye on it for someone."
11. Cutaway of gun barrel
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Lieutenant Colonel Steve Russell, 4th Infantry Division:
"I know that in Al Awja that same evening, we were looking for a list of Republican Guard officers. Among them we did find a Republican Guard brigadier general and a Republican Guard colonel that we were looking for."
13. Various of military vehicles on streets of Tikrit
STORYLINE
US forces in Iraq on Thursday displayed treasure found buried in the garden of a farmhouse in the Al Awja area,
just east of Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's birthplace.
About eight (m) million dollars, 350 (m) million dollars in Iraqi dinars and 850-thousand dollars in gems were discovered.
The haul - which was put on display at the presidential palace in Tikrit - also included jewels and a passport belonging to Sajida Hussein, Saddam's wife.
American troops discovered the treasure when they raided two farmhouses on Wednesday.
In addition to the loot, soldiers captured one of Saddam's bodyguards and up to 50 other people believed to be tied to his security or intelligence forces or paramilitary groups.
A US military spokesman said the detainees included a Republican Guard brigadier general and a Republican Guard colonel.
The spokesman said it was unclear whether the cash was intended to pay bounties for attacks on American troops or to provide the Saddam loyalists with luxuries while they were in hiding.
