5 - Ilyushin II
This plane was once a proud Soviet-era aircraft which was designed to be operated as an air letter in remote areas. The cargo plane was built for the Soviet air force in 1975, but has sat abandoned in a United Arab Emirate airfield since 1999. And no one has any idea how or why it ended up here, locals say the plane essentially appeared out of thin air, in terrible condition. The stripped nearly bare aircraft is shrouded in mystery, and nowadays functions as a giant billboard for the Palma Beach Hotel. However, no one at the hotel seems to know anything about the abandoned plane either, or for that matter, why their name and phone number is advertised on the broken down airplane.

4 - Lady Be Good
This US Army Air corps B-24D was part of a bombing raid during World War II on Italy in April of 1943. It would be the first and final mission for this aircraft. Officials estimated that the craft must have gone down in the Mediterranean Sea, but an extensive search proved futile, as there was no sign of the airplane or its crew. In 1958, an oil survey exploration crew spotted the downed aircraft in the Libyan Desert. Despite having crashed into the sands, the plane was in decent condition, the radio and machine gun were still functional. But, there was still no sign of the 9-man crew. In the 1960s, remains of eight of the nine crew members were found scattered across the desert. However, the remains of the gunner, Vernon L Moore have yet to be located.

3 - Grumman HU-16 Albatross
This mysterious abandoned plane washed up on a remote beach in Mexico, the craft is believed to have crash landed near Puerto Escondido, and all the crew is thought to have survived, despite their being no sign of them. Whispers and rumours have led locals to believe this plane was used for illegal smuggling activities. Some say the crew was eaten by crocodiles, but no one knows for sure. Today, the airplane has deteriorated and is only a shell of its former flying glory. As the remains of the wreckage sink further into the Gulf with each passing year, the sensationalism of the story as to how this plane may have been abandoned here grows as well.

2 - Douglas R4D8
This US Navy cargo plane was once a symbol of the golden age of air travel, now, this craft lies hollow and nearly forgotten on a deserted black beach in Iceland, where it has remained for over four decades. Its tail and wings are gone, all of its windows are smashed in and the outside is painted in thick coats of rust. The exact reason for the crash remains unknown, many suspect the airplane simply ran out of fuel after the pilot made the mistake of switching to the wrong fuel tank. Against the black desert sands, this white corpse of an aircraft stands out like a sore thumb. This abandoned vessel of flight has become a popular tourist attraction for those willing to make the trip through the Icelandic terrain.

1 - Spirit of Kansas
These planes were once part of the United States government black projects, the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit Stealth Bombers were built in the 1970s as part of the Advanced Technology Bomber units. The price tag for these crafts, two billion dollars a piece. But in February of 2008, on a takeoff from Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, moisture was found to have seeped inside one of the B-2's computerised control systems, which caused the jet to go completely haywire. This plane was called the Spirit of Kansas, under further investigation, the moisture was found to be in the port transducer units, which resulted in the distortion of information sent to the are data system. In other words, the flight control computers calculated an incorrect airspeed and angle of attack, which resulted in the nose of the plane pitching up 30 degrees more than it should have, leading to an unrecoverable stall and crash. This crash is said to be the most expensive accident in United States Air Force history.
