In this video I demonstrate how to tie a barber's pole knot. It will be one of 6 bights which I find appropriate for practical uses as well as for learning the knot.
You can easily recognize the knot due to the spiral effects it has.
The knot is not an interweave of two casa knots, but has an over-under sequence when completed. It is set up in quite an unique way, comparing to the usual way we use to tie knots. Although the setup is a bit messy, the knot is easy to tie when you have some practice in.
The setup for the knot is tied by crossing all the cords when going down the knot and under all the cords when going up. This will create an awkward setup that looks quite messy, but it is actually correct.
The interweave with the other color will lock everything in place nicely though. The interweave is made by going over all the cords of the first color when going up the knot and under all cords of the primary color when going down the knot.
This knot is shown in Ron Edward's book Round knots and braids.
Do not give up on the first try of tying the knot. Follow carefully and try to see the pattern that we use to form the knot. Because of the way it is set up, it is easy to think you are on the wrong path. I also often retie the setup before adding the second color.
Enjoy the video!
