The Affair is an American television drama series created by Sarah Treem and Hagai Levi. The series premiered on Showtime on October 12, 2014. A TV-14 version of the pilot episode was made available online beginning on October 6, 2014, via YouTube, SHO.com, and several other on-demand formats. On November 10, 2014, Showtime renewed the series for a 10-episode second season to premiere in 2015.

The series won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama and Ruth Wilson won the award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards in 2015.

The Affair explores the emotional effects of an extramarital relationship between Noah Solloway (Dominic West) and Alison Bailey after the two meet in the resort town of Montauk on Long Island. Noah is a New York City schoolteacher and Williams College alum who has had one novel published, and is struggling to write a second book. He is happily married with four children, but resents his dependence on his wealthy father-in-law. Alison is a young waitress trying to piece her life and marriage back together in the wake of the death of her child. The story of the affair is told separately, complete with distinct memory biases, from Noah's and Alison's perspectives.

Ruth Wilson (born 13 January 1982) is an English actress. She is best known for her performances in Suburban Shootout (2005), Jane Eyre (2006), and as Alice Morgan in the BBC TV psychological crime drama Luther since 2010. She has also appeared in Anna Karenina (2012), The Lone Ranger, and Saving Mr. Banks (2013). In 2014, she had a voice role in Locke, and a central role in The Affair, a series for the American Showtime network.

Wilson is a two-time Olivier Award winner, and was nominated for a BAFTA and Golden Globe for Best Actress in a mini-series for her role in Jane Eyre as well as for a Satellite Award and won a Golden Globe for her role in The Affair.
