It is heartwarming to watch a team of young Teochew opera artistes performing in this popular classic opera. Teochew opera doyennes Yao Xuanqiu, Chen Yu and Xie Suzhen, were engaged to guide this team of young actors during rehearsals.
Chaozhou opera (Chaoju) "Li Jing Ji" (Tale of the Lychee and Mirror), is also popularly known to opera fans as "Chen San Wu Niang" (陈三五娘), the title referring to the 2 lead characters who meet by chance at the Yuan Xiao Festival (元宵节) in Chaozhou city (潮州) and are immediately infatuated with each other, but cannot express anything more than a polite greeting.
Days after their chance encounter, Chen San goes back to Chaozhou to try his luck at finding the lady of his dream. Meanwhile, Wu Niang is despondent over an arranged marriage to the boorish son of a wealthy family. As Wu Niang sits at her balcony and broods, her maid Yi Chun suddenly notices Chen San approaching their quarters. When the blinds are raised, both recognize each other immediately.
Wu Niang seizes this opportunity to wrap a pair of lychees with her silk handkerchief and hurl them at Chen San. Chen is overjoyed to receive the gift of love and plans to disguise as a mirror polishing craftsman to get nearer to the lady with whom he has fallen madly in love.
