4. Franklin Castle
America is not known for its castles, but this one in Cleveland, Ohio is definitely worth mentioning. Franklin Castle was built in 1881 by a wealthy banker and it was cursed from the beginning. Hans Tiedemann, the owner, lost his children in the next three years. When Hans began to renovate the castle, he added secret rooms and passages. It is not known how many or what they were used for, but speculation suggests they could have been used for nefarious purposes such as the poisoning of his wife. Franklin Castle is shrouded in mystery, but discoveries in the 1970s have fueled the fire of speculation and horror. Over a dozen skeletons have been found in the house and passersby claim they have seen a woman in black standing at the window which could be the servant girl Rachel.

3. Quinta da Regaleira
These incredible ruins are located in Sintra, Portugal. The castle changes hands many times, but when it was purchased in 1892 by Carvahlo Montero, it was transformed into a true Gothic castle. The property is guarded by gargoyles and soaring pinnacles create a fortress-like feel. But there’s something going on beneath the foundation of this once opulent private residence. There is an extensive labyrinth of tunnels, leading out to grottos, caves, and the nearby lake. These tunnels also connect to the Initiation wells or inverted towers built on the property. These wells are not meant for water and never were. Instead, they were built using Masonic principles and constructed for Tarot initiations. The wells are deep with spiral staircases, nine viewing platforms, supposedly to evoke Dante’s Inferno, and the Knights Templar cross decorates the stone floor. Looking at the sinister ruin, it’s hard not to imagine what might have happened in these mystic wells.

2. Leap (Lep) Castle
This castle has the reputation for being the most haunted in Ireland because of its incredible and terrifying history. It was originally built around 1250 by the Ely O’Carroll clan. The Chapel associated with Lep Castle is the site of the O’Carroll brothers’ bloody feud. The chapel is also home to a very old torture method called an oubliette, from the French for “to forget.” The oubliette is more or less a hole in the ground, filled with wooden spikes. It became the tomb for many prisoners--and guests--of the Irish clan. Leap Castle changed hands in the 1600s to the Darby family. Their son, Jonathan, is said to have hidden a hoard of treasure somewhere in the castle, which has not yet been found. But the castle’s most famous resident haunt was summoned in the early 1900s and has been around ever since. The Darby’s experimented with dark magic and Mildred Darby is credited with bringing forth an Elemental spirit to haunt the castle. Visitors who claim to have seen the ghost say it is malevolent with black eyes and an inhuman face. The current owner claims his family has come into contact with some of the resident spirits, but overall they reside happily as Leap Castle.

1. Houska (How-ska) Castle
There is no shortage of speculation on this castle in the Czech Republic. This castle is nearly 800 years old and its claim to fame is a supposed entrance to Hell beneath the fortress: a black hole in the Earth with seemingly no bottom. When it was built, the castle had no occupants and was not placed near any trade route nor fortified from the outside. Therefore, many believe that the castle was built solely to keep the creatures from the underworld from escaping. The popular story behind this castle is that prisoners were once used to explore the bottomless pit in the basement. One prisoner, allegedly, was lowered into the pit. Once he began screaming, he was immediately pulled back up, but he had aged 30 years or more in the few seconds he was gone. He is said to have gone insane shortly after and was never able to relate what he had seen. Visitors for years have claimed they see people on chains roaming the courtyard, huge black dogs nipping at their heels. If it isn’t an entrance to the underworld, there is still something sinister going on at Houska Castle.
