Just as I suspected... the pitch control with strobe is the only difference between the Pioneer PL-990 and the Sony PS-LX250H turntables. The Pioneer also hard-wired the pre-amp to be permanently on, but you can remove the jumpers and solder in a switch if you want to turn it off (to use the phono input on your receiver). The Sony was even designed to accomodate the strobe; they just didn't install it.
