Description:
Given that South Korea is the 14th-largest economy in the world and Seoul is the fifth wealthiest city in the world, you’d think that there’d be nothing you couldn’t buy in that thriving economy. But actually, there are all sorts of surprising items that are hard to come by, from Western streetwear brands and foods to standard hygiene products. Our video shows you 20 things you cannot buy in South Korea.
In South Korea there’s a counterfeit culture of fake designer streetwear that makes it very hard to buy genuine articles. Top brands like Vetements and Supreme are copied and the youth culture is so keen on following trends that they buy the knock-offs. This creates a Catch-22 situation, as the big brands then won’t sell their goods in such a culture of fakes.
It’s also Western food that is hard to come by in South Korea. If you’re looking for Sour Patch Kids, Beef Jerky, Kraft Dinner or Cheez-it Crackers, you’ll be disappointed. Popular treats like Pop-Tarts and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are available if you know where to look, but they’re so restricted to specialty aisles and they’re so expensive that you won’t be buying them easily.
Then there’s the issue of typical hygiene products. You’ll find it hard to buy your favorite feminine hygiene products or toothpaste in South Korea. As for deodorant, you’ll be amazed to learn that South Koreans rarely wear the stuff. And their bath towels aren’t the huge size that Westerners are used to, either.
