Description:
Why do we love video games? Sure, there’s the cathartic enjoyment of experiencing the types of thrills and high-octane happenings that you wouldn’t dare dream of facing in real life. Then there’s also the camaraderie of doing battle against other gamers as you collectively – or combatively – venture into new challenges and surroundings. Of course, there’s the ever-looming allure of eye-popping graphics. But at their core, and like so many other hobbies, video games represent an activity or task that brings satisfaction through achievement; there exists a sense of accomplishment in beating that final boss and successfully completing the game.

That sense of accomplishment simply wouldn’t be there if not for a certain degree of challenge being already inherent in the game. In fact, the greater the degree of difficulty in the game, the more triumphant of a sensation is left to be encountered once the game is conquered. Game developers and designers understand this and construct their games accordingly, although there is no singular right way to guide gamers to that level of realized satisfaction. Make a game too easy and it can be completed without ever achieving the requisite difficulty level necessary to engender that sense of accomplishment. Make it too difficult and gamers might tear their hair out amidst the frustration of futilely chasing a feeling of victory that will never come.

This fine line of difficulty in video games created a generational shift in the way that games are developed. In the late 1980's and early '90's, games grew more ambitious and, for many developers, that meant upping the ante in terms of the inherent difficulty involved. The goal seemed to be tormenting gamers with maddeningly challenging games. But over time, developers clued into the fact that crafting increasingly impossible games may not be the best marketing tactic when you hope to encourage the purchase of more games in the future. So as games have grown more technologically advanced and visually complex, they have also become easier.

What most video game developers have come to understand is that gamers typically want to be challenged, not tormented by an insanely difficult and seemingly never-ending video game prison. Some, however, may feel that things have become too soft over time, leading to players who can now reign triumphant without truly having their mettle tested. As we will see with the recent releases of Demon’s Souls and the retro edition of Mega Man, certain developers have shown an interest in harkening back to a bygone era of tough-as-nails games. This generational gap also helps explain why some games have maintained their vaunted standing among the hardest to beat even decades after their release.

Flashy graphics and thrilling first-person shooters may come and go, but an agonizingly hard level or boss can last forever. Just ask any gamer whose psyche was forever damaged by haplessly trying to beat Contra back in the late-eighties. Here are 10 video games that have earned formidable reputations as some of the hardest to beat of all-time.
