China's paramount leader Deng Xiao Ping celebrates his 91st

birthday on Tuesday (22/8). No official ceremonies are planned to

mark the occasion but none has ever been held. The architect of

China's much-vaunted reform programme was last seen in public in

February 1994, for Chinese new year commemorations. In that

appearance he could barely walk, fuelling speculation about his

state of health. A photo apparently taken of Deng on China's

national day last October 1 showed a frail figure sat in a chair

and wrapped in a blanket watching the fireworks. Since then there

have been mixed reports over his condition. But the government

continues to insist that Deng is in relatively good health for his

advancing age.
