STORYLINE

Russian President Vladimir Putin left Iran on Tuesday after an official departure ceremony with his Iranian counterpart, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

It ended a one-day visit to Tehran.

Putin was attending the summit of Caspian Sea littoral states along with the leaders of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

The Russian President also held meetings with Ahmadinejad and Iran's supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei on the sidelines of the one day visit.

The Caspian Sea summit was aimed at discussing wealth distribution and the legal status of the Caspian sea, believed to contain the world's third-largest energy reserves.

This was the first visit of a Kremlin leader to Tehran since World War II.

Putin's visit took place despite warnings of a possible assassination plot and amid hopes that personal diplomacy could help offer a solution to an international standoff on Iran's nuclear programme.
